On March 25, 2020 Jeremy Howard, a research scientist at the University of San Francisco,  posted a youtube video  on twitter on why we all need to wear masks. Three days later...

"Jeremy wrote a viral Washington Post article on March 28th about why Americans need to wear homemade masks to slow COVID-19. This article sparked a nationwide grassroots movement in the U.S. that created enough buzz that within days it led to the U.S. CDC changing its guidance and recommending that all Americans wear masks in public (April 3rd)."

Here is a simple mask design that is posted on Jeremy's website that can be created without the need of any tool but a pair of scissors....

And here is an instruction video for the above plans...

Important: How To Clean Any Homemade Mask

Rotating Masks to Disinfect them

If you have multiple masks, the best strategy is to rotate use of the masks over several days, which gives time for the virus to die  New York Times link

Time is a powerful disinfectant; infectivity of SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for the COVID-19 illness, plummets after two to three days on hard surfaces. The virus lasts even less time on other surfaces (SN: 3/4/20). Some researchers have recommended rotating through a series of masks, so that worn masks can “rest” and passively become virus-free again.  link

The Germ-Cleaning Power of an Open Window

To improve protection for the wearer, a coffee filter or paper towel can be easily inserted into the mask to improve filtering. For instance, the Hong Kong Consumer Council recommended design includes a paper towel, after scientists “scanned kitchen paper towel under electronic microscope and revealed that the fabric size, gaps and layout of kitchen paper towel are similar to that of the middle layer of surgical mask”.
